digitise cassette tapes

Audio Cassette to mp3, CD or USB

From the 60s through to early 00s, audio cassette tapes were the economical choice for music lovers around the world. Vinyl records were expensive to produce (just as they continue to be now) and so the cassette made music production more accessible to smaller companies and rebel bands that forged the punk and disco era. The invention of the portable cassette player was a revelation too. Boomboxes and Walkman cassette players were prized possessions, despite their tendency to eat up your favourite tunes without the slightest warning!

How we convert audio cassettes to digital

Our digitisation process:

  1. Place an order with one of our popular Memory Box digitising kits and then select your chosen output – CD, USB or digital album.
  2. Your digitising kit will arrive the next day and you simply put the box together, fill it with your cassette tapes and we’ll organise a collection. You can include other old tapes, cassettes and pictures too if you want and we’ll do it all in one go.
  3. We track the delivery to our office.
  4. Before converting to digital, it is essential to deep clean cassette tapes using a two pass wet/dry method. Cleaning tapes, a common consumer-grade method of tape restoration, are available for cassettes but are often unreliable and can damage tapes even further. At EachMoment, every single tapecassette or photo is assessed and cleaned on a case by case basis using bespoke cleaning methods.
  5. We use broadcast-quality cassette players to playback and digitise each cassette. Domestic standard players and USB converters often produce a low quality conversion and are sometimes prone to chewing up tapes, resulting in those precious memories disappearing forever. The tape decks used by EachMoment provide better sound quality than a USB cassette converter as they allow for adjusting the bias – used to get the highest output, the best high frequency response and the lowest distortion – for both chrome and metal tapes.
  6. Once the cassette is converted into a digital file, its quality is assessed and re-mastered if necessary. ‘Hiss’ is reduced as much as possible and dynamics processing software is applied to improve sound quality and loudness.
  7. The newly created mp3 files are transferred to your chosen output format.
  8. We return all your cassettes to you via tracked delivery, along with your CD or USB, or we’ll email you with a link to the digital album if you chose the Cloud option.

Why should I get my audio cassette tapes digitised?

Although cassettes were the most durable format at the peak of their fashion, one reason cassettes were replaced by CDs is that they can remain in peak condition for 30 years if stored properly, whereas a CD stored in the same condition can last up to 100 years. Even when stored in optimum conditions, cassettes can still experience 10%-20% signal loss through magnetic decay over as little as 10-25 years depending how they were manufactured. Subsequently, your old cassettes containing your favourite music or maybe your own recordings could lose much of their quality or even deteriorate entirely.

The sooner you transfer your cassettes to digital and CD the better. Converting your cassettes to digital and CD protects your cherished music and audio recordings that are entrapped in your deteriorating cassettes. As well as freeing up tonnes of storage space, you can put your trust in a format that will never degrade and won’t put your treasured memories at risk. Converting cassettes to digital and CD also allows you to revive your old music by re-listening on your computer, laptop or your mobile, so you can take your musical memories with you wherever you go.

The best way to convert audio cassettes to digital mp3 files

Digitising your old cassettes individually is a laborious and unreliable process – we know it’s probably not your favourite pastime. Not only does EachMoment use the highest resolution conversion equipment, far surpassing the low-quality conversions you get with consumer-grade equipment, we will also clean your cassettes beforehand to ensure they are restored for improved playback in your cassette player. Converting your cassettes to digital and CD and preventing time taking its toll really is too easy to pass up. If you have any cassette tapes or any old videophoto or audio formats that you’d like preserved on CD, DVD or digital which are accessible on your smartphone, TV and computer, we will collect them from your doorstep, convert them to digital and return them to you in one of our Memory Boxes, ready to be gifted or kept personally for years to come.

Why wait? Get your cassettes converted now!

Once these steps are complete, your cassette is fully converted to digital and CD, giving your audio a new lease of life. It’s now time to relive your newly restored audio memories. Preserving your precious memories and gifting an EachMoment Memory Box to a friend or family member is an especially touching way to remind those closest to you how much you care about them. Whether it be a birthday, Valentine’s Day or Mother’s or Father’s Day, the memories enclosed in an EachMoment Memory Box always make the most thoughtful gift.

A Brief History of Audio Cassette Tapes

The cassette tape revolutionised the way in which we consume music, laying the path for the methods portable audio listening that we have today. Introduced in the early sixties, cassettes enabled users to easily record their own audio at home, while the introduction of cassette players in cars transformed long car journeys forever. At the height of their popularity, cassettes also acted as a spark for social change. Their compact size meant that rock and punk music was more easily brought to nations behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, laying the foundations for western music and ideas to prosper among younger generations. While cassettes remained popular for many years after their initial inception, the introduction of CDs led to the steady decline of cassettes into virtual obsolescence. However, many in the independent music community continue to release new music on cassettes due to their low production costs and affection for the nostalgic format. Like vinyl records, cassettes are seeing somewhat of a revival with the UK with a 76% increase in cassette sales over the last 4 years.
